On August 27th the UNDERHOUNDRAILROAD will be helping needy shelter animals get to rescue groups in the Midwest*. This campaign is dedicated to the oftentimes-overlooked “Big Black Dog” in shelters across America. Chances are there are some in your local shelter. Before you take one from us, please consider going to your local shelter to rescue or adopt. UHRR always encourages local adoption first. All animals in need are welcome on our transport. However, the heart of UHRR lies with the larger, older adults because they need the most help. Vanloads of puppies never make us feel like we’re accomplishing our mission and it’s something we wish to avoid – puppies are welcome; but please try to extend a helping hand to our older, larger fellahs, too. Summertime is a desperate time for shelters whose seams are splitting with unclaimed, dumped and depressed animals who are longing for a new home. We hope to save 100 animals this trip.
* If there’s significant interest from the Northeast, we’ll set up a transport there as well for a later date. If you are a Northeast group who would like to help please let us know.
ROUTING
Our drivers have years of experience and are experts in load planning to ensure the safety and comfort of our precious cargo. There is no physical separation between our drivers and the animals -- proper ventilation and temperature is ensured throughout the trip.
Route 1 originates in Harrisville, WV to South Bend, IN where they meet with Route 2 in Chicago.
Route 2 originates in Heath, OH en route to Indianapolis, IN where they meet with Route 1 in Chicago.
Route 3 continues northbound animals from Chicago through the state of Wisconsin on Route 90/94 to Minneapolis with continuing service to the Canadian province of Manitoba.
Air support – We are trying to recruit the help of private pilots. If your shelter or group is just out of reach of our ground route let us know. We may be able to help.
REQUIREMENTS
We require that all animals have rabies and certificates of health before travel. Bordatella and parvo vaccinations at least 10 days before travel are strongly recommended. If an animal cannot be altered prior to transport, the receiving group must furnish proof of alter to the shelter of origin once completed. Shelters must bring their animals to the closest point on our route. If you need help setting up arrangements to our route please let us know.
VETTING AND PULL FEES
Most shelters charge a modest pull fee to cover the cost of vaccinations. Many have access to very inexpensive vetting which can include spay/neuter for prices several times less than your local vet. Rescues, please inquire directly with your shelter of choice. It is the responsibility of shelters and rescue groups to communicate directly about pull fees and payment. UHRR is oftentimes asked to become a collection agent, a task we do not enjoy and one we don’t have time for. Agree on payment terms before you pull an animal.
RESCUE GROUPS
New groups, please introduce yourselves. There are always more animals in shelters than groups to take them.
SHELTERS IN NEED
The shelters below are ones who have asked for help, many of whom we’ve worked with before. If you know of a shelter not on our list who would like to be added to our network, let us know. Anyone can participate as long as they can get their animals to our route.

DONATIONS
These large transports require large cargo vans and lots of fuel. But they save anywhere from 80 to 100 animals. We operate very efficiently at about $8.00 per animal. These large runs cost between $700 - $800 per mission. Our only source of support is generous donors. Can you help? Please mark checks clearly “UnderHound Railroad”. Donations can be sent to:

Did You Know?
The UNDERHOUNDRAILROAD completed its longest transport of needy shelter animals in our history. In April our UNDERHOUNDRAILROAD warriors tore up 4,185 roundtrip miles of track in one mission. In the Fall we will begin to lay tracks as far south as Florida and as far west as the Pacific Coast. We are also looking to join forces with established transport groups who would like to partner with us to expand the entire network.
Other ways to help
Are you a transporter anywhere in the United States or Canada?
A rescue group in the United States or Canada who can help needy shelter animals?
An overnight host who can offer a warm bed and a hug to a weary 4-legged traveler in transit?
A donor who can help put gas in our tanks? – see donation section above and let us know about your pledge: donate@underhoundrailroad.com
If you can volunteer your time we'd love to know about you -- please drop us a line: volunteer@underhoundrailroad.com
(If you are not a rescue colleague and/or prefer to be removed from my list, please send request to remove@underhoundrailroad.com)
