"Hi Denise,
I would like to
donate the fund to pay for the yearly domain name registration for your
site that provides the events calendar for the mid-singles in your area.
I feel bad that you could not do it for the singles because of a lack of
funds so I want to make it happen. Once we have the domain name
registered, you can have your calendar hosted under my site. There will
not be any cost for you. What URL would you like to have for your site?
UtahMidSingles.com? Is your site for the Salt Lake City area only or for
several areas in Utah?" TheLDSSinglesSite.com

This calendar of activities will be moving TO
http://www.saveadogandkids.org/slcactivities.htm
whenever you want to see
what is happening across Utah for mid singles and there it is updated by
volunteer daily. Job offers below too. (there were no donations
anymore to support hosting and domain fees)Let's all help each other by referring resources, jobs,
and other ways we can help each other on this group. INvite all your
friends, refer those looking for work, resources, rentals, help, etc.
Many Utah families need help, and many can offer extra resources, jobs,
goods. Let's go back to the old fashioned neighborly way of helping each
other out. WE can all benefit from this.

5/18/10 Wow we love our UTah Schools and their teachers, principals,
secretaries, students and parents:
Hey
Denise
I have
asked both Logan and Cache school districts to forward emails about
Letters to Soldiers and to have them ready by May 27. The first email
went out over two months ago, the last time we talked on the phone and a
reminder email went out this week (to all district personnel in both
districts). Also, as part of the email it mentioned that the school with
the most letters would get a prize. I am wondering what prize you have
in mind, two for each district. I also need to know where I can drop off
letters the following week (first week of June). I have a teacher friend
who lives in American Fork who has offered to drive letters down to be
delivered. Is American Fork where the letters will be delivered. Time is
getting short so let me know so I can plan ahead. Thanks, Sherese"
( I wish I had a teacher like you in each school district in Utah.
Have her call me when she gets the letters to American Fork and I can
go pick them up. It might be perfect for our airport Welcome with
Banners in June and then the rest will be used for the July 10th WElcome
HOme in Pleasant Grove catered by Rubios and Lindon WalMart for the
405th ARmy REservists coming back from AFghanistan. This is just
great!!! We need volunteers please!!!

Pet Boarding Tips
by Claire Thornock
Brazelton
Summertime
calls for family road trips:
visiting extended family and
friends, adventures to theme parks,
and swimming in the ocean. However,
when traveling, many families face
the hard decision between bringing
their four-legged friend along or
leaving him at home with a sitter or
boarding facility. What to do?
Many pet owners choose to place
their dog or cat in a kennel while
the family is away, but it can be
hard to know if your pet friend will
be properly cared for. What do you
look for in a pet boarding facility?
How do you find the one that suits
your pet the best?
Dr. Wanda V. Pool, owner of Deepwood
Veterinary Clinic in Virginia,
believes there are "Eight Golden
Rules of Pet Boarding" that will
help to keep your pet healthy and
safe while you are away. Pool
created these rules because she
knows how hard it can be to feel
secure about trusting your pet to
someone else.
"Finding the right pet boarding
facility can be tough, especially
when leaving your pet behind to go
travel," Pool says. "But these tips
can teach you what to look for in a
pet barding facility and how to
prepare yourself and your pet for
the visit."
1. Research: Find
out about boarding facilities from
reliable sources, like
veterinarians. To find out
complaints have been made about that
facility, check with the Better
Business Bureau or another
authority. Tour the entire facility,
and don't be afraid to ask questions
about any concerns or problems that
you see.

Hello folks hope everyone is having a good week.
My short film "La Lucid" looked amazing on the big
screen at the AMC theater Santa Monica 7 3rd

before the movie Iron Man 2.
If you didn't make it to my screening you can now
watch it on youtube, I just uploaded it.
The more views I get and comments the more chances I
have in winning this Ford
Motors Fiesta Movement contest. Also I will
have opportunities with Ford & have my short film
made into a feature based on my original feature
script that wrote in the 90s. This short film I
changed the title and incorporated the Ford
Fiesta into it for Ford. Any support is very
much appreciated to help me get the youtube views as
needed. This will help me get the credentials I need
to get back and finish my film "The Bboy Connection"
which has been on hold.

My connections at Blue Chip (who manufacture the Morning Moos
products) are having an AWESOME special this week through
Saturday. I literally cannot believe the pricing! It’s even
below their special event WHOLESALE pricing!
It’s on a first come, first serve basis. So the sooner that
families can act on it the better. I strongly encourage
everyone to share this with their local friends and family
as well!
Blue Chip has some of my favorite freeze-dried and
shelf-stable foods—and they are having a KILLER sale on over
50 different items this week. How great is the sale? Well,
just as an example, they have an entire 5 gallon bucket of
corn meal or potato shreds for only $10!
They have #10 cans of oats, chocolate pudding, taco TVP
(which I love), freeze-dried onions, blueberry pancakes,
biscuit mix and so many other of my favorites that I use
everyday for only $5 bucks!!! (All of which I love.)
They also have my oft used freeze-dried celery and the red &
green bell peppers for only $5.82 for a #10 can!!! Also
consider the freeze-dried peas, mushrooms, and sour cream
powder for only $9! Even Macey’s has never been this low!
Again, with prices like these they will sell out very
quickly with prices like this, so I believe getting the
message out there quickly is important. They are located at
3431 S. 500 W. in CLS and are open Monday through Friday
from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. I know that for this
special they will NOT set anything aside for anyone. If
you’re not physically there, you’re unable to take advantage
of this sale.

Disney's "The Lion
King" -- the spectacular-sized, family-friendly
musical that introduced large-scale puppets to
Broadway audiences -- will finally play Salt
Lake City.
The national tour of the musical will play at
downtown's Capitol Theatre Aug. 11-Sept. 12,
2010, the highlight of Broadway Across America
Utah's season, which will also include
nationally touring shows of the more irreverent,
adult-oriented puppet show, "Avenue Q," as well
as two other movie-to-musical adaptations,
"Legally Blonde" and "The Wedding Singer."
Current Broadway
subscribers have until April 20 to purchase
tickets for next season. "We've already renewed
about 600 patrons," said Elizabeth Nebeker,
spokeswoman for Broadway Across America Utah.
"We're right on pace. 'Lion King' is such big
show for this market, and we've trying to bring
it for years."
The stage musical,
adapted from the 1994 Disney animated movie,
premiered on Broadway in 1997, where the show is
still playing.

Thanks
Kelly for hosting our 11th Conference brunch!
I have a little 88
yr old man to visit this am that is all alone and his dear wife of 65 years just
died night before last and he called me last night to thank me for being a good
friend to them. . Doris
came to Utah as a young woman in her 20s to meet an LDS man and met a soldier
named Stratford stationed in the Army at Fort Douglas. They told me about
dancing together in those days and when we first met, we sat in MACYS at
University Mall for an hour talking about their wonderful life together. I
will always treasure how dear they were together.
They came up to SLC to my Operation Ensuring Christmas Concert last year,
invited me as a special guest to the Rotary Club of Utah County at the Riverside
Country Club, came to my Christmas party last Christmas. I invited them to
the last Singles Conference brunch at my home. Strat and Doris were so in love
all their lives. He called her his "Georgia Peach", they went to the temple
together and everywhere together. He has lost his best friend of his life, and
he told me he was sad. The funeral is next Saturday at noon but I want to go see
if he is not alone this am and bring him chocolate cake, he loves that a lot.
They were very dear to me and I don’t want him to be alone. Funeral and
viewing will be at the Grandview 16th chapel 1200 W and 1150 N. in Provo
next Saturday starting at noon if anyone that met Strat and Doris at my home
wants to come with me. Thanks Denise
"Hi Denise -
Thanks for sharing this. I am so
sorry to hear of his wife's passing. My deepest
condolences go out to him & to his family.
Unfortunately, a good friend & coworker of mine is having her
wedding reception/open house the same day & time so
unfortunately, I will be unable to attend his wife's funeral
services. I hope they have plenty of family and friends
around who will be able to be there.
Thanks again,"

"Hi Denise,
I'm so sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I probably
don't need to explain to you that I am burning the candle at
both ends. I've been doing this for 5 years and it has been a
long road. As you say, I always get requests but it is harder
to get volunteers. A year ago I was ready to quit because I got
tired of showing up and being on of 5 people. I honestly told
the Lord that if He didn't make it obvious to me that I needed
to keep doing this, I was closing the doors after Christmas.
From that point forward, my volunteer base has grown slowly and
now at any given time I can have 30+ volunteers.
I believe that word of mouth and the internet with groups like
facebook and twitter have been a big help in getting the word
out. Friends come and enjoy the experience. They start telling
people and before you know it more are showing up. I do think
it takes a lot of time and a lot of trust and faith in the Lord.
Two years ago we sent out 175 boxes at Christmas. Last year it
was 1250. This year I'm shooting for 2000, but we might surpass
that....who knows! As of right now, I don't have donations or
money but I'm going to keep working with what I've got and
expect that God will provide. I know He will.
My main strategy is persistence. I'm a former elementary school
teacher with NO business experience. I don't like to speak in
public but do anyway. I also have to plan events, which I knew
nothing about a year ago. Now I do it all the time. Frankly, I
don't enjoy that aspect either, but it is worth the result.
I can't imagine doing this with a disability such as yours. I
am actually somewhat disabled myself, but I'm past the worst
years of surgeries and other issues. Back then I just did a
little bit at a time and that was when we did the 175 boxes at
Christmas. Do you have anyone that works with you such as a
good friend that would come along beside you and help while you
go through your recovery? I know that I couldn't do what I do
without faithful volunteers. I have a very small crew of truly
dedicated people that will help me several times a week.
Without them, I couldn't do this. If I truly had to stop, I'd
probably be in your situation as I don't know of anyone else
that is willing to work 12 hour days, 7 days a week for no pay,
especially when I usually put my own money into the project.
I know I didn't help you, but I will pray for you and I am
thankful to know there are others out there supporting our
troops. My son is a Marine who has been deployed three times.
He's in the Wounded Warrior Battalion suffering from PTSD and
TBI. I know a little bit about what you must have been through
with your fiancee."
It's Tuesday Evenings at 7:00 pm. Kenny Mayes is the
instructor. He is a CES Instructor and is a Religion
Instructor at the University of Utah Institute. Our subject is
Church History, the D&C, and lives of the Prophets. The class
is located at the Chapel at 11626 South 300 East, in Draper.
It's an outstanding class and we would invite all Singles 31+ to
come and join us. The cost is $21.00 for the course or $2.50
per session.

coming back to the stage for EASTER 2010!
Please pass this audition information on
to any vocalists/theatre friends who might be
interested.
Also, mark the performance dates on your
calendars- we're looking forward to another great show!
AUDITION INFORMATION
Auditions will be held December 12th for “Power in His
Touch,” a nondenominational, inspiring musical. The play
is presented by the Youth Enrichment Foundation and will
be directed by Carolyn J. Stevens, with Gary Sorenson as
musical director and Tracy Ann Evans as stage manager.
The show will be produced as a fundraise for the Utah
Food Bank.
Auditions will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, 2010,
at Union Station, Old Timer’s Hall (south end,
upstairs), 2501 Wall Ave., Ogden. Appointments are
required. Call (801) 645-5924. Those auditioning
should be prepared to sing 32 bars from a Broadway-style
musical to show vocal range. No a cappella. A pianist/CD
player will be provided. Be prepared to identify
rehearsal conflicts.
Roles are for 10 children, ages 8-12, and 20 men and 20
women, ages 18 and older. Lead roles will be paid.
Rehearsals will be held in Ogden, with music rehearsals
on Sundays, beginning Jan. 3, 2010.
Performances will be on March 26 and 27, 2010, at
Peery’s Egyptian Theater in Ogden and April 5-6, at the
Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center in Salt Lake City.
Background
“Power in His Touch” was written by Sandy composer
Colette Call and was performed in 2005 and 2006 at the
Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center where it starred
David Osmond, Katrina Nelson and Daniel Beck. It was
presented again in 2008 at Cottonwood High School in
Salt Lake City directed by George Dyer and starred Beck,
Jessie Clark Funk and Casey Elliott.
The story
Kendra, a modern-day single mother, is struggling to
overcome a life filled with challenges. At a rehearsal
for a Christmas concert, she is overwhelmed by feelings
of guilt and regret. When she questions her
worthiness to perform, her friend and co-soloist Jason
tells her the story of “Sarah,” a woman who lived during
the ministry of Jesus Christ. As the audience is
transported back to the dusty streets of Jerusalem, some
2,000 years
ago, Kendra learns of Jesus, his mother Mary and
Disciples Nathaniel and Judas Iscariot. She also
imagines characters such as Tyras, a wealthy and
arrogant politician who marries Sarah, and Mordecai, his
duplicitous accountant.
How did Christ’s life affect those around him and what
was expected of the prophesied “King of the Jews”? Those
questions and other are explored as the story unfolds.
As both Sarah and Kendra learn of the Savior’s message
of love and His redeeming sacrifice, their lives are
forever transformed.
Hope
you all had fun!!!Sherisse, Gordon, Tamra, Tiffanie, Shar, LIsa,

could go to Haiti to help, but he is in the middle of school tests at Utah State
and can’t go. We will be talking in the morning. I am French and it pains
me not being able to go there to translate for our medical teams from Utah.
So we will be meeting Sunday to put our heads and resources together to plan
what we can do from here. Thank you so much Potluck is 6pm at address below.
Please bring something to go with the Paella (Spanish Shrimp and Rice dish), or

something. Before the quake Haiti had 380,000 orphans, just imagine how
many they will have now. We hope both governments will just allow all orphans to
be adopted into good families in the US and other countries that can. Then they
can work with the donated funds to rebuild the country and reunite the families
left that survived. "Thanks

that were sent there. Soldiers were lending me their cards and
sharing the goodies. From the looks of it, it was a very appreciated
gift.
I thank you for them. It made them happy and surprised that
someone was thinking of them."

Friends,
Can you share this with your friends please:
this very angelic family with wife and 5 small daughters under
10 yrs old; one baby, one autistic angel named Summer, and 3
others are really in need of our help. Their home is falling
apart, very small. 4 little girls share one room and the baby
girl is in the hall way. The house is so small and they have so
little but they have much love in their home and the children
are very happy and well adjusted, smart and loving. Amazing
what such wonderful parents' love can do in such trying
circumstances. I have some things for her and the baby. But
they need much more help. The mother has had trouble keeping up
with some health issues she faces, and the dear father doing
anything he can to work, since due to a bad back accident with
herniated discs, lost his job, but will do anything though he
risks his back going completely out and ending up in the
hospital. His health insurance runs out this month, and I hope
his disability attorney will get him on Social Security and
Medicare to get needed medical treatment. But they sure could
use some work they can both do. Mother Kathy can do at home
billing/taxes/computer work. He has a truck, and willing to
work for any amount. They are truelly the meek of the earth as
the Lord describes, and will do anything for others. They
deserve all the support we can give them to help these beautiful
5 little girls grow up to their full potential. These are
angels. Weatherization program is coming to fix the furnace,
insulate the doors and windows leaking out so much heat, and
replace their old fridge. But so much more is needed. They only
have food stamps. Please pass this on. Thank you His name is
Jared Hindmarsh and he is really sweet and willing to do
anything to keep his family going.
From the family we have collected tons of baby
things for the two little girls already:

this week with
LEtters to Soldiers Founder and a special surprise Iraqi
interpreter for our soldiers that risked his life many times
for our troops.See interview below.
"Wow I have my own amazing news that I am so excited and humbled
by: "After being the Keynote Speaker at the Disabled Veterans
Conference, and meeting the dearest vets including one Air Force
Injured Vet that offered to help me with anything I needed to
support our deployed troops, and then being invited to the
Airshow at Hill Air Force Base to have my booth for Letters, and
meeting so many wonderful military families. 500,000 people
attended the show. I met a dear widow of a pilot that offered
also to help me, and a Major of 24 yrs retiring that offered to
help and so many other dear people. One young man came up to me
and he had an accent. I asked him where he was from and he said
“Iraq” “ I was a translator, " he said. Wow, I have only heard
from many of our guys how these young men that speak English are
so helpful to our US military and how they risk their lives and
their families to help them. He told me the US gov't had
brought him over here after his life was almost taken 3 times
and he and his friend who also translated and were Chemical
Engineers but stopped their education so they could help the
coalition forces, are now in the US and helping other refugees.
He has been living in SLC in an apartment with two Americans but
he doesn’t like how they smoke and have girls over all the time
they find on the street, because he promised his mom that he
would not drink, not smoke or be wild in the US. Hey maybe he
will come to church with me. Hussein keeps telling me he will
do anything to help the Coalition Soldiers and I know he loves
them dearly. He told me how much he cried when one of the
soldier friends in Iraq was blown up next to him and how he
cried for his family back in America that had lost their father.
He too lost his father who served in the Iraqi Army when Iraq
was fighting Iran. His mother and 20 yr old brother are still
in Iraq and he is working with Immigration to bring them over
here too. So anyway my friend Rebecca on FM100 had scheduled me
to be interviewed on her radio show tomorrow am and I am going
to surprise her with this special guest that loves our US
soldiers even more than I do. He wants to help me as much as
possible with Letters to Soldiers and then attend one of the
Universities to get his Masters in Chemical Engineering. His
English is really good. He is going to show me many pictures of
his Army friends in Iraq that helped the Iraqi people and
children. He says the Press doesn’t tell the good stories and
he feels that God/Allah has sent him here to tell the wonderful
things the US military do in Iraq. I felt like the Lord has
blessed me to meet someone like this and I too have to help him
tell the stories of the good the soldiers are doing over there."

Denise DeVynck | Penning Letters to Soldiers Overseas
Denise DeVynck has dedicated herself to making sure that no soldier is forgotten. Almost three years ago, she founded LetterstoSoldiers.org, a website and volunteer movement to send letters, care packages, Christmas gifts, and on-going words of support to sometimes as many as 1,500 Utah troops serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Turkey. Denise galvanizes service organizations, schools, politicians, and military families and holds year-long concerts, fundraisers, and letter-writing collection drives to assure that a message of support is sent overseas. During the holidays her efforts turn into Operation Ensuring Christmas, a huge effort to collect, organize, and ship Christmas care packages to servicemen and women abroad. Denise was the 2009 Keynote Speaker at the Disabled Veterans' Conference and continues to plan patriotic events to welcome home troops and honor the service they provide.
This is A Personal Touch, a chance to check in with ordinary people making an extraordinary difference in the world. I’m Rebecca Cressman and today our guest is Denise DeVynck. She leads the Letters to Soldier’s Movement and the website that helps support U.S. troops that are serving in Kuwait and Afghanistan and in Iraq.
Q: And Denise, this is a project that has taken on such a special meaning, in a way to say thank you to our soldiers. Denise, when did you begin to get the idea that you wanted to be able to have letters sent from all across the country to our soldiers who are serving abroad?
A: Well Letterstosoldiers.org is now in its third annual Operation Ensuring Christmas Campaign. Last year we were able to send 1,543 care packages to six units, including a hospital in Kuwait, that we have been sending to now for our second year. And it’s thanks to amazing companies here in Utah like: UPS, Tahitian Noni, Neways, Richard Paul Evans, Cricket Communications and on and on and on that we have been able to raise last year, fifteen thousand dollars for the shipping costs. And with the help of so many volunteers here in Utah: from the companies, individuals, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled Veterans and their auxiliary wives, we were able to send so many special Utah products and handmade things like Christmas stockings. Christmas cards from forty school districts across Utah, and this year we hope to be able to send 2,500 which is our goal.
Q: Is that because you’re envisioning our soldiers or troops abroad and how much they sacrifice that you want like a personal thank you? Is that your whole idea: we as a community can tell them that no matter what holiday it is, we are thinking of them?
A: Absolutely. That is what we want to do because our Utah military that deploys, and some of them will actually be going on their third deployment this Christmas; our biggest volunteers the Utah Army Reserve at Fort Douglas 96 Sustainment Unit will be going this fall. They were our biggest helpers at our Operation Ensuring Christmas Concert and our Welcome Home Troops celebration last June. They are our dearest friends and we want to make sure that they know that while they are away from their families—one of my dear friends Lt. Colonel Felsch is going to be there for—he’s been in 26 years, and he is going to be in Iraq away from his eight children and his wife in Heber—and I tell you things like this from home will really boost up their spirits while they are over there away from their families at Christmas. That is when it means the most. We also ship all year long.
Q: I’m curious though, Denise, I mean: Are you a daughter of a military family? What is it, I know that you have done a lot of other Philanthropic activities in the past with animals and kids rescue, what is it that drove you to be so involved in making sure that our military felt appreciated throughout the year?
A: I know; everyone always asks me that question, “What got you started? Why do you continue to do it; it’s a lot of hard work? I’m disabled myself, but let me tell you in someone else’s words because I don’t like to toot my own horn, basically from our Chaplain Montoya who served for twelve months for our Utah National Guard Task Force Wasatch. With three hundred and ten men and women from Utah, “Dear Denise we are writing to thank you for offering your support to us while we are here in Afghanistan serving in the military. Thank you for all your long hours and many efforts to make this holiday special for us. Thank you to all the supporters of your efforts—soldiers that thank me for your kindness. There were a number of soldiers whose only package for the holidays this last year was the one you sent to them. Because of you no one was forgotten.” That says it all Rebecca, because honestly that is why I started doing it. When I heard that soldiers during twelve months sometimes got one or two emails the whole time and that some of these soldiers and Marines and Airmen and Seamen didn’t get anything as far as a package, I thought, “I can round up a bunch of people.” And so now with so many volunteers, I collected more at the Disabled Veterans Convention this last Thursday, and next weekend I am going to the wonderful VFW, Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Convention. With the helpers across Utah, I am able to make sure our Utah military and others that request it like this beautiful hospital—and if the public and everyone out there want to join us and come read the letters, see the pictures we get back from all those packages. The thousand Marines sent us pictures. The 328 Army Reserve Hospital, Unit of Nurses and Medics in Camp Liberty sent us the most beautiful pictures. You can see them all on the website and you can join us in this Operation Ensuring Christmas effort this year.
Q: Now I have also seen that you have even the littlest throughout the state writing: schools and classrooms that will take on the project to try to make sure that they get every child in a class to write ‘X’ amount of letters or an entire school or a school district. And so it really has become kind of a groundswell throughout the community to be able to join you. That must be really empowering for you?
A: Absolutely. It really is Rebecca, we love our card makers. They are the best card makers in the world. We get them from all over the country, but our Utah cards mean so much. And every box that we sent last year had at least 20 to 50 cards stuffed in there, with all the items so that they are able to really, really feel the love from home. And what they do with these, and Brownie Troops and Eagle Scouts collected CDs and made huge banners, because in some of these locations, especially the clinics, the hospitals, the ERs in Kuwait, they put these huge banners on the walls so that the military and the wounded soldiers read them and see them and see how much they are loved from back home. So we want to enlist everyone: the Scouts, the Brownies, the Girl Scouts, everyone, all the schools, all the teachers, all the Church young men, young women and all the different church groups. We want to enlist everyone to show our military from Utah we love them; we’re thinking of them and we want them home safely.
Q: Well and I know that you are getting letters of thank you from all troops that are serving in all the different countries, but there is an increased amount of stress for our troops that are facing the combat in some of the more difficult areas of Iraq.
A: Exactly.
Q: And I know this is also not just a friendly reminder that we appreciate them, but in some sense an emotional boost to them when they are under so much stress.
A: Absolutely. We sent to a medical unit in Mosul, Iraq, where we’ve lost many of our troops and it is the hardest fighting area right now, and they love it so much; they appreciate it. They come back from Mission and they write and say, “There were your packages and we opened them up and it just cheers us up and it helps our morale because we had to go to a funeral ceremony of some of our brothers just recently. And it is wonderful to have this boost after that.” As well as in Afghanistan and Kabul right now, there is a lot of fighting and we are supporting people there. So we are so grateful that we can be a little part of their wonderful service. They are our heroes; the children love to write that. But I have a very special surprise for our Personal Touch audience and for you. I have on the line a patriot who risked his life. His life was threatened three times. And his family as well because once they find out, the bad guys find out, that he’s helping our soldiers and our soldiers have told me over and over again how much Iraqi interpreters are helpful to them. Because without them they couldn’t do the work that they do. And I have on the line Hussein who is going to tell you in his personal words how much our American Military means to him. Hi Hussein.
Hussein: Hello, how you doing?
Q: Hussein you have been a translator for our soldiers, our troops in Iraq, or you had been for many years?
Hussein: Yeah, I spent like more than four years with them and I was serving with them as interpreter and sometimes give them some advices about the Iraqi culture and their wealth; how they are living in Iraq.
Q: Well and you are now living in Utah, and that is because as Denise is saying, and thank you Denise, is that as you would facilitate the work of the U.S. troops as they try to make the different communities more safe, your life and your families’ lives were endangered. So you are here in some sense seeking asylum, is that right Hussein?
Hussein: Yeah you can say that, because you know that the militia, the bad militia, which they get their support from Iran and from other countries, because they realize we are working with the Coalition forces we try to serve. My country, Iraq, and they were helping the Americans about that. So they try to chase me and chase my brothers. So they tried to kill me three times and they couldn’t but they tried to kill my brothers. So now me and my brothers we are in different places. So now I am here, and I have like a special immigration visa because I deserve that.
Q: Yes.
Denise : Yes you do, Hussein. Can you tell us just that one story where a fellow soldier was killed and how it touched you and what your thought was?
Hussein: Okay. Well that was Ramadan and I remember in 2007, his name Daniel, and he had a few days to go back home for vacation and he told me that he can’t wait to see his wife and to see his son. So when we were in the patrol that afternoon, I was in the third HUM V he was in the second HUM V. He was a gunner and he was a specialist too. So the first HUM V passed and the second HUM V when she was moving on that IED explosive so that it would explode. He was the gunner and unfortunately he died. And I was thinking about him and when I saw him like that it was really, it was terrible because I said, “Poor guy he just have a few days to go back home to see his kids and wife.” So I was wondering about what his family they are going to say? He said he is gone, just we waiting for him. I know they were counting day after day, minute after minute to see him. So it was very terrible. I couldn’t handle it and started to cry for him. And I don’t know what I am saying because unfortunately the people who made that, they are Iraqis, and if they can say these are my people they kill them. Why? Because he is serving my country and he’s serving America, but what I am gonna’ say, “The man is gone, and I hope he is in Heaven now and just give the, patience for his family. I don’t know what to say. It is really hard for me.
Q: Well I think it does and I appreciate that you would share that with us, because I think it does show that there is, and we that there is, a division within different countries as to how our troops are perceived. But knowing that there are Iraqis like you that understand that the troops are there to stabilize and to strengthen your country, it helps the family. It absolutely does.
Denise: You know, Rebecca… Hussein came to me at the Air Force Air Show where we had a booth for lettersforsoldiers.org and I asked him where he was from when I heard his accent. He said, “I am from Iraq.” And I said, “Oh how wonderful,” and then he told me what he did and then he started to tell me all his love. And he literally said, and he does not stop saying this, “I want to help you support the coalition troops, the American soldiers, Marines, Airmen, and Seamen. I want to help you while I am here to support them. So we are so grateful. We believe that God sent Hussein to us to help us, because he had that desire in his heart to do all he can for his friends over there that he is still in touch with. He still emails everyone and they really love him. He has friends here in the States with the military. And so we are going to work together to send as much as we can. If I could tell you just real quickly, if everyone could go to letterstosoldiers.org, we have two events, tomorrow night at the Tahitian Noni Free Concert with Shaun “Hammer Hands” Barrowes and another amazing singer Annelise LeCheminant, are going to devote the night and songs to our military and their families. It is a free concert as well as on the Fourth of July, the Patriots’ Day Tea Party with Mark Shurtleff, Angela Winston, and the One Voice Children’s Choir. Shaun Barrowes, food at the Lake Ridge Junior High at 951 S. 400 W. in Oren from 10:00 to 2:00 on the Fourth of July. It is going to be an amazing day. We have Veterans coming, army recruiters, Civil Air Cadets, DAV, VFW and our HOme Town Hero UTNG Drew Reese is coming to sing some Michael W. SMith Songs. We are going to have giveaways, food, everything. If you can come to letterstosoldiers.org, come and participate. Come help us, come volunteer! We need to raise $25,000 for just the shipping costs this year. We need 2,500 stockings made by volunteers; everything we can do to show our military overseas that their sacrifice is so appreciated and that we are here waiting for them.
Q: Thank you so much and I wanted to also have one more opportunity to thank Hussein, because the heroes in the wars come from all countries, and from all cultures, and from all faiths. And we know that Hussein, you indeed are also a hero for risking your life as a translator for our troops. So thank you and thank you for your dedication to help our soldiers who continue to serve in the coalition. And Denise DeVynk, thank you for your energy and your passion to make sure that there is not one soldier who is forgotten who is serving abroad.
Denise : Thank you so much.
