I will pass the word along.  I am a sign language teacher - I also teach my border collies sign language as well.  Where are you located?  Could I help with the deaf collie?  Maybe I could give him a home.  We have two border collies and they are both hand trained as well as voice command trained.  We love them both so much and I would love to have one more.  Thanks
Roxann

Hi there again!

I definitely have lots of time for Paint because I work 6 hours a day from 9 until 3 and my husband works from 3:30 until midnight.  We never leave our animals alone at any time.  I have two border collies - two boys - Jake and Ben.  We have been teaching them sign language as I am an instructor in this field for the last 10 years.  I do not consider myself a professional deaf dog trainer though but believe that I am quite good at instructing animals to listen and pay attention to me.  Both our boys are enrolled in agility and flyball.  We consider them to be our kids since we do not have any.  We love them to death!!!  We live on a hobby farm just outside of Vancouver in British Columbia on 10 acres of land so it is a perfect place for animals.  We had a horse last year who passed away at the grand old age of 30 and plan to get another one sometime in the future.  At the present time, we are on the waiting list to foster a horse with the SPCA.  Let me know what more information you require and what I may need to do.  Thanks for contacting me!

We have a 50 foot by 50 foot - 6 foot high fenced in area for the dogs complete with a dog house for shelter when it is raining outside (but truthfully - they are never left outside in the rain!).  They are completely safe as the gate is locked and as I am at work in the day from 9 until 3 and my husband works from 3:30 until midnight, someone is always home.  The front of the house has a deck so we built a large gate that closes and locks so that the dogs are always safe even when we leave the front door of the house open in the summer time.  I felt this was necessary for our own peace of mind - afterall our dogs are really our "kids" and I need to know that they are always safe.  As well, they are always leashed when they are out with us - we do not feel that they are safe if they are not - after all you never know what might happen.  We are very careful with our animals - I have raised dogs all my life and have experienced the pain and sorrow of what can happen if you are not.
Although I am not a professional dog trainer I am good with animals.  I used to have a blind dog which stayed with me for years until he finally passed away - he lived a fully productive life with me and I trained him to my voice and a whistle.  I also rescued a dog whose owner was threatening to put it to sleep because it was deaf and blind and I kept her until she died when she was nineteen.
We will talk about it some more and see what we can arrange.  Okay?
Take care and God bless,
Roxann

Okay but let me know if they don't because I would love to use him with my deaf kids - especially one in particular who is deaf and autistic.  She loves animals especially dogs.

Take care and god bless!!

Hi Denise,

Received an email from Sandy, the Delta Society Therapy dog trainer of Tucson.  I tried to access the photo of the red/white border collie that is deaf.  We (hubby and I) are registered Delta Certified Pet Partners.  I am also a Delta licensed instructor and evaluator.  We live in Phoenix Arizona and are also docent volunteers with the Arizona Humane Society and members of Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.  We have 3 kitties who are PP and we visit numerous places in addition to being the demo team for the American Red Cross/Arizona Humane Society CPR/ER First Aid to Companion Animals classes.

One of our kitties, Lady, was tortured at 2 mos (stray) by someone putting a lit firecracker into her rectum.  She expelled it before it exploded, but not before she was burned.  Lady suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns over 90% of her body.  She lived, and due to reading about her in our local Saturday newspaper six years ago, we adopted her.  We became members of Arizona Humane Society to support the programs and people who helped to save her life.  Soon thereafter we decided that membership was just not enough.  We made application to become volunteers and were accepted.  That was six years ago.  Two months later we made with Lady our first pet visitation.  We have been involved ever since.  When the AHS became affiliated with the Delta Society, we became full-fledged PP.  We also have 3 dogs in training to become therapy dogs.  We are also looking to start a READ program within our own community this next year.  We go anywhere and everywhere.

We would like to become involved in burn victim rehab as we believe Lady could be a source of hope and encouragement to other burn victims as she has survived awful burns herself.

We have a large fenced back yard and all of our dogs are also crate trained.  I am reminded of the fireman who adopted a deaf dalmation from a breeder who left it to die, paying full price for this deaf dog.  For the past 13-14 years he has on his day off, gone to visit deaf children teaching them fire safety and the stop drop and roll.  Because the dog has learned sign language and because these kids are schooled in that language, they are able to communicate with the dog using this method which makes a more lasting impression.  I wonder just how many deaf children have been saved over the years because of the dedication of this one man, and his throw-away dog.  Brings tears to my eyes everytime I bring this story to mind.  How blessed I am to be a part of a program - worldwide - that can serve the needs of the community and its citizens in this manner.

We are interested in this border collie.  We currently have a smooth-coated tri-color (Cimerron Sioux "Susie").  We were not in the market for another dog, but this dog warmed my heart.  Please tell me the particulars about the dog and what the procedure is for adoption.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

Patti

ADORABLE!   Just wanted to wish you best of luck in your quest for a forever home for this guy.

Deaf dogs are an absolute joy, I wish mine could do therapy work, but he gets too spooked by people coming up behind him.  Though he is as gentle and friendly as they come, therapy work would be to stressful on him.

Instead, he does obedience, flyball and agility and leads a very full life.

Again, best wishes to you and Paint!

Sincerely,

Mary N. Moore
